#132 Remhoogte Chronicle Cape Blend 2018
What is a Cape Red Blend?
The Cape Blend class of wines in South Africa is struggling to find its feet. It only has one firm rule (“Pinotage must be the largest component”), and everything else is up for grabs. But just because category is ill-defined, that doesn’t mean the wines suck.
🌏 Fruit is from the Stellenbosch side of the Simonsberg; a small mountain range which separates Stellenbosch from Paarl. Estates at the foot of the Simonsberg (on either side) are taking great pains to mention this fact, as it usually implies slightly higher altitudes and lower temperatures.
🔬 The blend is made up of Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & small but important portion of Carbonic Maceration Syrah.
