#146 Raka Petit Verdot 2019
Prodigal PV strikes out on his own
🗺 In its home of Bordeaux, Petit Verdot is strictly a blending grape, but in the New World, with a little more sun, PV can ripen up to be a charming, albeit still concentrated brooding varietal wine. This guy hails from Klein River in the Overberg District, so cooler than Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, but a fair bit warmer than the cooler regions of Walker Bay and Elgin.
👄 The end result is a delightfully brawny black fruit affair, with plenty of concentration and grip, as well as some delightful liquorice and herbal complications.
🔬 This wine was vinified fairly energetically, with plenty of rigorous pump overs, which explains all the rich colour and tannin. Wine was then racked into barrels and malolactic fermentation took place, before it was settled and moved to 225-litre French barrels for maturation.
