#163 Bloemendal Suiderterras Sauvignon Blanc 2016 [Wine info video]
Deconstructing Durbanville Wines
🗺 Durbanville, with its altitude and cool Atlantic ocean influences has, of late, been making a lot of noise about its aromatic whites and MCCs. Sauvignon Blanc, for the most part, but also Riesling and Gewurztraminer have been bottled with impressive results, and today we’re featuring a wine made from the single block of vines that arguably started it all – the SuiderTerras Block on Bloemendal Estate.
🧑🏻🌾 Planted in 1982, the 8 hectares of Sauvignon vines on the northern slopes of the Kanonberg are the second oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines in the country, outdone only by the Amos Block in the Swartland, planted in 1965. These old vines produce less than 1 ton per hectare, which makes this legendary wine in rather high demand. Only three barrels made. 100% new oak.
