Rising Stars – Visser & Roussanne

🏆 Olifantsberg is currently under the leadership of the incredibly accomplished Elisme Visser. She was Tim Atkin’s Young Winemaker of the Year for 2021, her Blanc 2020 release just received a Platter 5-star award, and the 2018, featured here was a 94pt wine in Tim Atkin’s 2019 report and received a Platter 4.5 star rating.

In 2021, Visser’s husband, Ferdie joined her in the Olifantsberg Cellar, bringin his own meticulous somewhat more granular approach to winemaking. The combination of the two brains workinig in unison really is quite impressive to behold.

🔬The wine is a blend of Roussanne (55%), Grenache Blanc (34%), and 11% Chenin Blanc, fermented in old 500-litre barrels, using native yeasts, and aging on the lees for 10 months. This is probably the biggest, most generous white wine in the Olifantsberg Range, but as Elisme has developed her reputation by making restrained, elegant, lighter-styled wines, this is perhaps not saying much.
