The legend of Trizanne Barnard
Trizanne Barnard has made quite the name for herself through her Origin Series of wines, and her Trizanne Signature Reserve Range, with wines from both those ranges garnering their fair share of “best in show” awards from some of South Africa’s most demanding wine shows. During my last tasting of Elim wines, her range, she was pitted against some of the most lauded winemakers in the country, and came out trumps on every single account. The TSW range is designed to be a little less erudite, hoping to tap into some mass market appeal, but Trizanne can’t quite help herself from delivering something that is far smarter than the category it aims to conquer. This relatively light Swartland Shiraz (only 13% ABV) manages to express such incredibly clear varietal characteristics, that is feels like it should be in every single introductory class on what shiraz in South Africa can be.
👃🏼 – The vanguard carries notes of blackberry candy, cardamom, herbal rocket leaf, and some subtle pepper.
👄 – The Palate is medium-light (by no means a heavyweight), but the slightly earlier harvest, allows for a really tasteful melange of sweeter blackberry fruit, cardamom, and herbal elements to combine into something a lot more complex than its cheap and cheerful packaging would imply.
🔬- Wine of Origin Swartland. Hand-picked from 18-year-old dry-land vines on schist soils. 100% de-stemmed & fermented in open-top fermenters. Elevage took place in 500L French oak barrels.
