=====================
A Strong Start
This 2020 bottling of the Monday’s Child Chenin Blanc is the second vintage from winemaker Alex McFarlane. Having spent some time working on the red wine team at Spier, before working on the viticultural team at DeToren, Alex decided to combine those two skills my taking the helm at the small Paarl winery, Druk My Niet [hyperlink]. If you haven’t had their Malbec, you’re missing out. Shortly after her stint with Druk My Niet, Alex and her husband Wayne decided to launch McFarlane wines, with this most recent bottling of their Chenin achieving a Platter’s 4.5 star rating.
The McFarlane range is produced in very small quantities with roughly 5000 bottles produced across their entire range.
👃🏼 – The vanguard is a delicate but complex mix of honeysuckle, sweet vanilla pod, apricot, saline, and chalk dust.
👄 – On the palate, there is a lovely mix of fresh, tart apricot, some nectarine fruit, and then a contrasting salty sea spray element. The acidity makes the wine feel almost lean initially, until you are alerted to the fact that those apricot elements are incredibly persistent, right down the middle, joined by some slightly riper orange citrus elements. Light-footed and lithe. A class act.
🔬 – Wine of Origin Stellenbosch, with fruit harvested from vineyards in the Polkadraai area. 100% Chenin. Fermented in 500l old oak barrels.
💰 – R220.00
