Morgenster Reborn

The Helderberg Stalwart, Morgenster Estate, are finally seeming more comfortable in their new era. After the founder Giulio Bertrand passed away in 2018, his daughter Federica, and his granddaughter Vittoria took over the estate, and began making some changes. New labels were commissioned, the winemaking team underwent some changes, and there was a subtle shift in the styles of some of their wines.
The Giulio range in particular has taken on new life. While the Nabucco remains largely unchanged, the Tosca has seen its Sangiovese component shift back a little, allowing a growing Cabernet Franc component to shine quite delightfully.
Another exciting shift in style involves the single cultivar Sangiovese. What was once a rather low-intensity quaffing wine has been sharpened up quite a bit into a rather structured, pleasantly weighted, New World example of the grape.
Of course, if you have yet to sign up for your Monthly HanDrinksSolo Wine Subscription then you won’t really know what I’m talking about until you hunt this wine down in your own time. So, until then, I’ve left you my tasting notes and some technical specs:

Tasting Notes

👃🏼 The nose is a supremely pretty affair with plenty of red fruit sweetness (Toffee apple candy, red cherries, strawberry, with an ever so subtle hint of watermelon), complicated by hints of fresh leather, and dried herbs.
👄  The palate carries some lovely vibrant sour cherry and grippy tannins, which immediately transform what you might have thought was a quaffer into something far more interesting.

Technical Notes

🔬 Wine of Origin Stellenbosch. From the Helderberg. 100% Sangiovese – a mix of clones R24 and SG3. Winemaker Yolande van Staden ensures that all fruit is tank-fermented, using two different yeasts – Renaissance Bravo and Renaissance Brio. Wine was racked into older oak barrels for just under four months; purely for the purposes of colour stabilisation.
