Kottabos is a sub-label within the Boschkloof stable where winemaker Reenen Borman can experiment with slightly more off-beat styles of winemaking that won’t confuse the more classic Boschkloof clientele. The range features two wines; a skin-contact Chenin Blanc and this Grenache Syrah blend (although there may well be a light-footed nouveau style Polkadraai Pinotage in the works).
With the Kottabos wines, Reenen further indulges his penchant for earlier harvested fruit, delivering wines that are lower in alcohol, lighter in body, and supremely aromatic. While the fruit he uses is not Boschkloof Estate fruit, Reenen remains steadfastly faithful to the Polkadraai Hills ward because (in his words), “that’s where all the granite is.”
Now, if you have yet to sign up for your Monthly HanDrinksSolo Wine Subscription then you’ll have to hunt this wine down in your own to be able to connect the info to the wine in the bottle. But until then, I’ve left you some tasting notes and the winemaking technical specs.
That said, it’s still worth watching the video, as thre are some pretty cool revelations about new additions to the Kottabos range.

TASTING NOTES
👃🏼 What an amazing inviting nose of raspberry, red cherry, red liquorice, lavender, fennel and white pepper,
👄 The palate treads really lightly, but there is just enough of those syrah tannins to provide a little frame around it all. The fruit is a mix of red grenache fruit – mostly strawberries, and red plum, which the is dollied up with a bit of white pepper dusting and some lovely violet floral elements. What a lovely expression. Serve chilled.
TECHNICAL SPECS
Wine of Origin Stellenbosch. The blend is made up of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Both components were fermented as whole bunches and left on the skins for ten to twelve days. The Syrah portion was aged in older French oak, while the Grenache was matured in concrete. It parcels were blended after eight months and prepped for bottling.
