=====================

A rare breed of romantic

Winemaker Wynand Grobler and his wife Anya were hiking with their children through the wine ward of the Limietberg, when they happened upon a vineyard that seemed to be calling to them both. Mesmerised by the scene, Wynand was immediately gripped by the conviction that he had to make a wine from the vines that stretched out before him, and he was not to be deterred.
As it turned out, the vineyard in question was a little patch of dryland-farmed Muscat d’Alexandrie bushvines, planted in 1971.
The juice recovered from these enchanting little beasties eventually found their way into TWO of De Kleine Wijn’s wines; the Jan Rap en sy Maats white blend (dominated by the delightfully wild and floral muscat fruit), as well as today’s HandrinksSolo wine of the day, the Kreatuur White Blend 2023. Both wines are thoroughly worth exploring.
If you have yet to sign up for your Monthly HanDrinksSolo Wine Subscription then you’ll have to hunt this wine down in your own time. But until then, here are my tasting notes and some technical specs on the wine in the bottle:

TASTING NOTES

👃🏼 The vanguard carries fairly generous notes of salty bread dough, pineapple, nectarine, and a wilder floral hint.
👄 The plate is medium weighted, but with great concentration. Elements range from lemon bonbons and orange barley candy sweetness, through to more tropical fruits. Texture is a big feature , with the illusion of chewiness, up front, followed by citrus pith and a waxy texture on the tail. A lovely wine.

TECHNICAL SPECS

🔬Fruit is sourced from a combination of Voor-Paardeberg vineyards and a muscat vineyard in the Wellington district.
The Voor-Paardeberg vineyards are planted on decomposed Table Mountain sandstone shale in combination with decomposed granite soils. Grapes were hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed.
Fermentation took place in 225l older small French Oak Barrels for a period of 9 months before blending and bottling. The blend consists of 45% Grenache blanc, 32% Grenache Gris, 17% Verdelho, 6% Muscat d’ Alexandrie.
| Alc 13 % | Residual Sugar 2.3 g/l | TA 5.6 g/l | pH 3.43 |
