Muratie estate is a delightfully quaint estate that holds their history at the core of everything they do. From the deliberately preserved cobwebs in their tasting room through to the naming of every single one of the wines in their range, Muratie ooze the sort of sentimentality that one might expect from the hallmark channel.

But when one begins to look a little more closely at their wines (while squinting through the cobwebs), one becomes aware that the cutesy facade has by no means prevented a healthy evolution.

The Laurens Campher Blended White is a refershingly modern and savvy blend that manages to defy classical genres and embrace more recent climatically appropriate cultivars like Verdelho, all the while maintaining their characteristic backward-facing aesthetic.

👃🏼 An extroverted vanguard of peach skin, smoky flint, tarter citrus, kelpy sea spray, and sweet naartjie sherbet, too.

👄 The palate is impressively chewy, with an almost-maroela-like texture to it all. The sweeter stone fruit is offset by some crazy vibrant tart citrus acidity, which is further complicated byy a very pronounced saltiness- reminiscent of the best verdelhos, and some Swartland chenin blancs as well.

Wine of Origin Stellenbosch. Winemaker Hattingh de Villiers. 54% Chenin Blanc, 30% Sauvignon Blanc, 12% Verdelho, 4% Viognier. Each component is vinified separately, and then is also matured separately. Each cultivar parcel remains in a mix of new and older 500-litre French oak barrels for 11 months. Only 40% of the final wine was allowed to go through malolactic conversion.
