Nero d’Avola in South Africa

There are only THREE Nero d’Avola Cultivar wines in all of South Africa. All made in very different styles. The first one in the country was bottled by Bosman Wines, from their mother block of vineyards in Wellington, in 2014. Which means that 2024 is the ten year anniversary of Nero in South Africa…The second one was bottled under the Ayama label, but it was made using fruit from the the very same mother block of Nero d’Avola on Bosman estate in Wellington, And the third Nero d’Avola is today’s HanDrinksSolo Wine of the Day – The Bosman NERO Rosé.
Nero d’Avola was first imported to South Africa from the Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo (VCR) nursery in Northen Italy. The genetic material, however, all came from Sicily in the South of italy, where Nero d’Avola is an indigenous cultivar. These vines were imported, quarantined, tested for disease, and finally propagated by the impressively progressive Viticultural team and vine Nursery that forms part of the Bosman Family Vineyards enterprise. But more about that in the video.
If you have yet to sign up for your Monthly HanDrinksSolo Wine Subscription then you’ll have to hunt this wine down in your own time. But until then, here are my tasting notes and technical specs:

TASTING NOTES

👃🏼 The is a nose very clean, quite cheerful, bustling with musk, rose water, candy floss, along with red fruit notes of strawberries and cherry candy.
👄 there is a bit more sweetness than usual – around 6g per litre, and that bit of extra sugar lends the palate that generous fruit candy note.  If you were ever a fan of fruit chews as a kid, or even Sugus; this wine will no doubt trigger a little nostalgia through it’s creamy strawberry chewing candy vibe. But there are ffresher primary notes, too; some pleasant juicy red cherry brightness, and even a hint of blood orange.
