The “B” Team
Barbera, like Barbarossa is a grape, not a place. It is grown most famously in Piedmont in the North of Italy.
Even thought it is widely accepted that Barbera is in no way indigenous to Piedmont. In fact, it only really got famous in Piedmont after phylloxera struck, and the Piedmontese needed to plant slightly more hardy cultivars than prima donnas like Nebbiolo. Barbera had developed a reputation for exactly such stickability, and – at the time – it seemed smart to plant grapes that wouldn’t keel over at the sniff of disease or pestilence.
The current theory is that Barbera was in fact indigenous to Lombardy, but today it is the dominant cultivar in regions like Asti Monferrato DOC and Nizza.
And despite it seeming like an absolute shoe-in for the job, Barbera is not permitted to be vinified in Barbaresco.

TASTING NOTES
👃🏼 The vanguard carries a super generous mix of red liquorice, bay leaf, oreganum, cherry candy.
👄 A supremely clean clear citrus juiciness hits your straight out the gate, tempered ever so slightly by notes of boiled cherry candy and red plum fruit. The acidity morphs into a lovely tart raspberry and sour cherry finish. Tannins are supremely silky and light, but just enough to hold out a gentle but lingering tail of raspberry and ripe cherry fruit.
