What do you get when you cross one of the hottest wine regions in South Africa with one of the fussiest grapes in France? Spoiler: not a sweaty mess — but a white wine that somehow stays fresher than the new TayTay album. Today we’re diving into Mischa Estate’s Roussanne 2024, a wine that proves Wellington isn’t just about bold reds and big heat.
If you have yet to sign up for your Monthly HanDrinksSolo Wine Subscription then you’ll have to hunt this wine down in your own time. But until then, here are my tasting notes and some technical specs:

TASTING NOTES

On The Nose: Citrus blossom (especially lemon), a leesy sourdough edge, orange zest, and—somewhere on the breeze—a dusting of apricot sherbet. Which probably means some small child is missing her apricot sherbet.

On the palate: Apricot candy and peach sherbet tones lead the charge, with jasmine florals sneaking through the back door. The fruit expression stays tight and restrained — no overripe drama. Texture is chalky and refined, acidity bright and mouth-watering, and the finish flicks in a lemon-leaf green snap for extra freshness.

Overall: Ridiculously fresh for a Wellington Roussanne: perfumed yet precise, textured without heaviness. Basically, it’s Roussanne doing yoga — flexible, balanced, and surprisingly zen in a hot climate.

TECHNICAL SPECS

Wine of Origin Groenberg, Wellington. 100% Roussanne. 12.5% Alc. Tank-fermented.
