Today’s Wine of the Day is Waterkloof Mourvèdre 2019, made by winemaker Nadia Barnard with estate fruit from Waterkloof in the Helderberg basin above Somerset West. At six years from vintage, it’s a great chance to enjoy some bottle age without the home-cellaring hassle or the old-fashioned need for self-restraint and delayed gratification—traits boomers supposedly had back in the Middle Ages. Or maybe on old wooden ships… But enough speculation, let’s dive straight into the glass to see what Nadia has crafted for us.

TASTING NOTES

AROMAS: On the nose – it’s a superb mix of fresh fruit and that lovely, slightly dusty tertiary vibe that makes you feel fancy, like those china cups in nana’s cupboard. Then there’s black cherries, red cherry candy, some sherbety elements, and more serious notes of cedarwood, with cellar dust and dried lavender hinting at its bottle age.

PALATE: On the palate – well… it’s Mourvèdre, but in a tailored suit. Because textbook Mourvèdre can be a little wild—rugged tannins and meatiness—but this is not that: the tannins have a fruit‑skin grip rather than sandpaper, with maraschino cherry, fennel, and a little herbal lift, standing tall without a decanter in sight.
