Altydgedacht Barbera 2018

HANSCORE: 19/25

Altydgedacht is an odd duck; it’s been in the care of the Parker Family since 1852, but needed a little help in 2017, and so partnered with VDMV Property group in 2017. The mix feels a little weird. Not unlike their wine range, which features a Gewurtztraminer and a Barbera, to accompany an MCC, a Pinotage, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chenin. The narrative is a little muddled really, but the Barbera is quite nice nevertheless. Waves of ripe black fruit, held upright by pleasant acidity. It may take a while to open up, but once it has done so, it’s more layered than a Bjørk stage costume.

👃🏼  Vanguard carries notes of cherry, plum, hint of oak, cedar wood, some dried leaves, and savoury game. Fairly open.

👄  Palate displays ripe black cherries and blackberries. Supremely clean fruit. Great clarity. Tannins are super silky, with some lovely spice on the tail. Red cherry acidity emerges slowly, and lingers delightfully. A decanter won’t be wasted here.

🔬 Durbanville fruit. Dryland farmed from 26-yr-old vines. Fermented in a combination of open fermenters & stainless steel tanks. Barrel-matured for 15 mnths (30% American oak).

💸💸 ZAR190.00 (as of January 2021)
