Groote Post SeaSalter Sauvignon Blanc 2020

HANSCORE: 19/25

Not the first of it’s kind…but definitely the wine that started it all. Coastal Sauvignon Blanc has been a thing for a few years…but this was the wine that really took out the marketing hammer and tongs to bash home the message that saltiness in a wine can be kinda cool. Since then, the reference to salinity or saltiness in white wines has only grown. Tim James did the sort of geeky meta-study that only Tim James could do, and began counting how often wine writers reference the descriptor “salt” or the flavour note of “saline”. The cliff notes version of his article is that the use of these words is rising fast – seemingly beyond reason. So the question is, “are wines changing, or are wine writers alarmingly susceptible to the unyielding power of suggestion wielded by ‘lowly marketing peeps’?”
But back to the wine…

👃🏼 The nose is quite lovely, but does take a while to show. Elderflower, asparagus, cut grass, chalk dust.

👄 The palate is relatively full with delightfully accessible notes of lemonade, saline (yes, I said it), tart apricot fruit, lemon curd, and granadilla. There’s also a hint of spice on the tail.

🔬 20% of the wine spends 4 months in oak. 80% of that oak is new. yeah, you better get out your calculator.

💸💸 ZAR140.00 (as of January 2021)

I actually quite enjoyed it. And i didn't feel like Han was dissing it at all. 19/25 is decent score for a wine in that price bracket.

Yeah, completely WB. I'm a big fan!

100% agree. Just because it's foreign, doesn't mean that it's good.
