======================
Usana Farming is a project launched by the Winshaw Brothers on Klein Welmoed Farm, situated South West of Stellenbosch Central. It deals mostly with chickens…and cows…and wines. It can all be a little confusing because the farm has one name – Klein Welmoed, which doesn’t appear on the front label. “Usana” is writ large on the label, but it refers to what is – as I’ve said – is mostly about meat production. Finally, “Winshaw Wines” does appear on the bottle, but it’s written in very small font, and seems like a bit of an afterthought; even though this wine is undoubtedly produced by Winshaw Brothers (JP and Pierre).

👃🏼 The nose carries a lovely mix of up-front fruit (orange melon, green pear, queen pineapple) and a more savoury flinty, stoney gravelly element. Which makes for intriguing sniffing.

👄 The mouthfeel is moderately weighted, with that pleasingly reductive riverstone element following through onto the palate. The fruit elements are ripe-but-delicate with notes of sponspek (orange melon) and green pear, closed out by a tart sort green apple candy and sherbet thing popping up on the tail.

🔬 100% Pinot Gris from Stellenbosch. Whole-bunch pressed. Fermented predominantly in Stainless Steel, using native yeasts. Some old oak and concrete eggs also used for fermentation.
