=====================
Elisme Visser seemingly defies all odds by producing incredibly elegant, and oft delicate wines out of the decidedly warm wine ward of the Breedekloof. One might think that she was involved in some dark sourcery in order to achieve these results, but in this video, we take a look at Olifantsberg’s vineyard sites, and discuss how their terroir differs from many of the vineyard blocks planted down on the valley floor. And as for the result of these climatic differences, here are some notes on how the wine presents in the glass:
—
TASTING NOTES
👃🏼 Vanguard presents a moderately open nose of savoury charcuterie and fresh herbs, followed by emerging raspberry sherbert, cherries, and red plum.
👄 The core consists of lovely fresh vibrant tart pomegranate notes, softened by sweeter cherry jam elements. These are complicated by that savoury bacony element, which itself seems to be couched in slightly deeper notes of blackberry and that sweet savoury mix of something like roasted plums.

TECHNICAL SPECS
🔬 100% Pinotage. ABV 13.0%. Wine of origin Breedekloof. The fruit is de-stemmed and then whole berries are fermented in open-top fermenters. The fruit is handled very gentle in the cellar, using only “soft extraction techniques”. Once fermentation has concluded, the wine is aged in older French oak barrels for 10 months.
💰 R175.00 (as of May 2022)
