Many of the most established producers don’t bother entering wine competitions because they feel like the cost of entering the competition would be better spent marketing their wines through more traditional marketing channels (like online advertising or IRL wine tasting shows)

2. A gold medal or a trophy award does NOT mean that all critics agree to the wines quality.
I have been part of judging panels where judges will debate for hours over whether or not a wine is “high quality”. This happens within competitions, but even more so across completely different judging panels. In fact, one meta study from California analysed the results of an entire year’s worth of wine shows from across the American West Coast and the results implied that winning gold medal in one compeition in no ways implies an increased likelihood of winning gold medals in other competitions.
3. While many consumers canNOT tell the difference between gold-medal wines and faulty wines, they ARE more likely to express enjoyment of a wine if the bottle features a wine medal on it.

An Australian study showed that wine medals triggered more positive responses from casual wine consumers, although this effect showed a decline in more serious wine drinkers. The effect was also more marked in cheaper wines. Nevertheless, medals = a psyhcological shift to wards a favourable report.
