What defines Groenekloof Terroir

Groenekloof is small, elevated wine ward at the heart of the Darling District, located on the increasingly trendy west coast of South Africa’s winelands. It’s combination of very close proximity to cold Atlantic, crazy off-shore winds, and iron-rich soils makes this little ward a really rather fascinating place.
For the most part Groenekloof produces Sauvignon Blancs and Syrahs, but (as you’ll taste the Samesyn Verdelho), this ward doesn’t like to be defined by any one wine style.
If you have yet to sign up for your Monthly HanDrinksSolo Wine Subscription then you’ll have to hunt this wine down in your own time. But until then, here are my tasting notes and technical specs.

TASTING NOTES

👃🏼 A big generous nose with all sorts of things going on! Very vivid apricot fruit, and pineapple, complicated by touches of reductive flinty salty riverstone type elements. There are also softer sweeter notes of caramelised pear and vanilla custard.
👄 A pristine seam of citric acidity runs down the middle like a laser scope on a sniper rifle. Around that core, there are sweeter riper touches of pineapple and ripe pear. Superb concentration and texture.

TECHNICAL SPECS

🔬 Wine of origin Groenekloof.
The vineyard is located on Papkuilsfontein in Groenekloof. The vineyard is tiny – only 0.3 hectares planted in 2001 with incredibly low-yielding vines. The entire crop is taken. The vineyard is visibly rich in red iron granite soils, 150m above sea level, 12km from the ocean constantly buffered by a cool ocean breeze.
Grapes are handpicked and cooled overnight, the following morning the grapes are whole bunch pressed into a stainless steel tank to settle and begin alcoholic fermentation.
Upon the completion of alcoholic fermentation, the wines are racked into a single old 300L French oak barrel. The wine naturally went through malolactic fermentation. Once malolactic fermentation was completed the wine received a small amount of Sulphur for its first and only time.
The wine was bottled on the 21st December 2023 after spending approximately 10 months in barrel.
