Live the dream; save the world

Painted Wolf Wines was born in 2006 with only two goals:
1) to raise money for the endangered Cape Wild Dog (a.k.a Painted Wolves)
2) to allow Jeremy Borg to realise his lifelong dream of becoming a winemaker.
Twenty years later, Jeremy has not only won a ridiculous amount of awards for his wines, but his company has also donated over R4-million to various conservation organisations around Southern Africa.

If you have yet to sign up for your Monthly HanDrinksSolo Wine Subscription then you’ll have to hunt this wine down in your own time. But until then, here are my tasting notes and some technical specs:

TECHNICAL SPECS

🔬 Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg. 100% Roussanne. The grapes are grown by Willy Mostert on the south-eastern side of the Paardeberg. The vines are planted on decomposed granite soils, and were hand-harvested riper than usual, whole-bunch pressed and fermented slowly with natural yeast. The wine spent 8 months in a 500-litre barrel, with daily stirring of the lees. Total production 3,108 bottles.
Alc 13.94% | Sugar 2.4g/l | Acid 5.9 g/l | pH 3.17 |

TASTING NOTES

👃🏼 The vanguard carries moderate-intensity elements of nectarines, salty bread dough, almondy-floral frangipani notes, and a bit of lemon blossom, too.
👄 On the palate, the texture is the first thing I notice. The mouthfeel has lovely, slick, slightly oily texture, with an element of old-vine vibes (where the wine almost feels chewy).
In keeping with the vanguard aromas, there are elements of fresh nectarine fruit with a gentle touch of oranges. The tail end has more of that almonds element, like raw apricot kernels (kinda like almonds, but smaller and softer).
