If you have yet to sign up for your Monthly HanDrinksSolo Wine Subscription then you’ll have to hunt this wine down in your own time. But until then, here are my tasting notes and some technical specs:

A bit of wine sleuthing

Before we even sniff this wine, we can hunt for some clues as to what’s in the bottle; a useful skill to have when you’re feeling clueless in the busy aisle of a bustling specialist wine store.
A quick scan of the bottle tells us that the alcohol on this wine is only 12%. That’s a huge clue to the style of the wine.
We talk in the video about how Roussillon winemakers started picking earlier to keep their wines fresh—avoiding the region’s past reputation for flabby, overripe wines. Well, Wynand Grobler has done the exact same thing here—harvesting Grenache Blanc earlier to retain acidity.

Tasting notes

👃🏼 The vanguard carries lovely fresh citrus and apricot.
You might expect riper notes of mandarin and peach from Grenache Blanc, but this expression is brighter, more youthful, more exuberant.
There’s also a slightly herbal, salty edge—like sea air and jasmine flowers.
[If you’ve never really sniffed a jasmine flower up close, do it—you’ll notice there’s something meaty and savory hidden beneath the floral aroma. That’s what’s happening here.]
👄 The blance on the palate is absolute genius. The softer stone fruit counters what could have been tart or citrus-dominated, leaving you with a silky, well-defined mix of peach, nectarine, orange cordial, and even a little naartjie.
[Here’s the kicker: this wine has less than 2g of sugar per liter. Yet it feels lush, rich, and full of vibrant fruit. That’s the magic of great vineyard work and sensitive winemaking—delivering layers of complexity far greater than the sum of their parts.]

If you ever lose your sense of wonder at finding naartjie sherbet, peach, and apricot in a wine made from grapes, then maybe it’s time to stop drinking wine altogether. But for now, enjoy this bottle—and if you want to learn more, check out the links at the end of the video which will lead you to more info on Kleine Wijn’s winemaking.
