Elgin Vintners Ridgelands Pinot Noir 2018

HANSCORE: 19/25

Supremely pretty. But perhaps too much so? It’s like hanging out with Kara Zor-El, when you’re really pining for Harley Quinn.
The nose is delightful, and it looks great in the glass, but I guess I may be something of a masochist when it comes to my pinots. I like a bit of a challenge; moist earth, rotting leaves, truffle, and some tannins to keep it all upright. This Elgin production is squeaky clean, and delightfully smashable, but I guess, at R285 per bottle, I’m not really after “smashable”; no matter how many insta winefluencers drink it by the pool.

👃🏼  The nose is lovely; more open than a hollywood marriage, with elements of mushroom, rose petals, oaky vanilla, & red plum (okay…and maybe a hint of dried leaves).

👄  Palate is soft, approachable, light, fresh. There is a hint of ripe red plum sweetness, kept its honest by cherry candy and pomegranate acidity.  Some of the more savoury flint & mushroom notes offer mild complications. No tannins on the tail to speak of.

🔬 Vineyards are at between 500m and 100m ASL. Grapes were 30% whole-bunch pressed, and then fermented in open-top fermenters. Wine spent 11 months in 228-litre barrels (standard size for burgundy).

💸💸  ZAR258.00 (as of January 2021)
