Arcangeli Estate Feiteiras Verdelho 2017

HANSCORE: 21/25

Krige Visser may well be my personal highlight of 2020. Working with Italian-born Sandro Arcangeli, he has produced some of the most fascinating wines of 2020. A completely nu-skool Nebbiolo that feels like a cross between an amber wine and a cinsaut, a fascinating skin-contact Semillon that earned itself a WineMag Top Ten award, and finally this Verdelho, which is the perfect introduction to cultivar that we are going to see a whole lot more of over the next decade or so.

👃🏼  If the nose was any more open, it would be a cleft palate. Beautiful notes of honeycomb, tart apricot, old oak, almond and elderflower.

👄  Palate is full, rich, and textured, with great concentration; notes of lemon drops, white pepper and saline appear upfront, followed by slow attack acidity. Which, incidentally builds to supreme laser-like proportions. Herbal elements, white grapefruit pith, and more lemon acidity linger on the tail longer than a Bonjovi mullet.

🔬 Fruit from east-facing, relatively low-yielding vines in Botrivier on Arcangeli estate. A portion spent 5 days on skins in a fermentation bin, before being removed from skins, moved into 300-litre French oak barrels, and allowed to complete primary fermentation and malolactic conversion.

💸💸   ZAR190.00 (as of November 2020)
