Bloemendal Estate Waterlily Malbec 2017
A prophet in his home town…
Honestly, I haven’t seen this much colour since the last gay pride march. So exquisitely inky. Malbec is a fascinating grape in that it’s indigenous to France (where it’s sometimes called Cot), but they don’t really seem to appreciate it.
Argentina have transformed it into a rock star, which has given other warmer new world countries hope that they too can produce something special.
This guy is made from Durbanville fruit. Fermented in open-top fermenters. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to concrete tanks with oak staves for 6 months. It is then transferred to French barrels (20% new, 40% second fill and 40% third-fill) for another 12 months.
