02:21 – THE HISTORY OF THE TERM “SUPER TUSCAN”
04:39 – WHAT DOES THE MORGENSTER TOSCA TASTE LIKE IN THE GLASS?
=====================
Morgenster have been producing epic Italian cultivar wines since 2006. Over the years, their Nabucco Nebbiolo has garnered huge respect for its faithful and “genuine” expression of the spirit of Piedmont, even though it was grown in the Helderberg on the Southern tip of Africa. But the wine we explore today is the Tosca red blend – another tribute to Italian wine folklore in the form of a “Super-Tuscan”-styled blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cab Sauv.
The Sangio clones used in this wine are a combination of the SG3 clone, which produces smaller berries (planted in 1999), blended with the much larger juicier berries produced by SG24 vines (planted in 2003). Both blocks face north-west.
In this video we use a little “quick maffs” to show just how significant Sangiovese is on a global scale. After that we chat about the term “Super Tuscan”, and how it can be interpreted in two different ways, and finally we discuss what’s in the glass. BUT if you have yet to sign up for your HanDrinksSolo Youtube Wine Subscription, then you’ll have to settle for reading my tasting notes, and using your imagination.

Tasting notes

👃🏼 The nose is very much out there. Generous elements of cassis, black plum, blueberry and maraschino cherry, laced with violets, thyme, and fresh potting soil.
👄 While the nose is all about black fruit, the palate shows a lovely splash of juicy red cherries and red plum alongside the riper black fruit elements. The tannins are super firm, and have that fairly distinctive rough Sangio quality to them, BUT the layers of fruit are concentrated enough to lean up against those tannins just fine.

Technical Specs

🔬 Wine of Origin Stellenbosch. 86% Sangiovese, backed up by splashes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
