Where did Carbonic start?

Today’s wine of the day is the RAAR Petite Sirah, crafted by winemaker Sheree Nothnagel using fruit sourced 100% from the broader Swartland District. This is unsurprising, as every RAAR wine is proudly 100% Wine of Origin Swartland—produced by the forward-thinking Riebeek Valley Wine Company.

TASTING NOTES

On the nose, there’s so much mood and depth: fresh, overt blueberry, some blackberry fruit pastille, deep florals like red roses and violets, brighter berry sherbet, cherry candy, and white pepper—which is interesting because, in a warm climate like Swartland, Petite Sirah’s rotundone components are usually fairly muted despite being the offspring of the great Dame Syrah.

On the palate, generous, concentrated but very primary elements of black sugar plum, maraschino cherry, and tarter wild blackberries create a lovely mix of sweet and tart. Most impressively, the tannic texture is superbly suede-like—firm without being rough—conjuring the sensation of the actual skins from those sugar plums tasted on the palate.
