Ken Forrester Old Vine Reserve Chenin 2019
HANSCORE: 20/25
Putting Ken Forrester’s Main Range old vine chenin into a cheap-looking royal blue screw cap is like sending Pavarotti to the Teatro alla Scala in flip flops and a wife beater. This is not about which enclosure preserves wine better, but rather about which enclosure will best allow the consumer to engage with this impressive talent.
👃🏼 Some delightfully reductive complications that stick around, but in the best sense possible. Flint, peach, sourdough.
👄 Palate carries layers for days; sweet peach, honey, bright pineapple acidity, white pepper spice on the tail. Decent length, too.
🔬 Fruit from 39-year-old low-trellis and bush vines. Barrel and tank fermented. Left on the lees (nine months in French oak, 20% new), and matured on secondary lees for added leesy complexity.
💸💸 Great value at ZAR135.00 (as of December 2020)
